Morris Michtom (1870 – July 21, 1938) was a Russian-born businessman and innovator who, with his woman Rose, came up with the idea for the teddy bear in 1902 around the same time as Richard Steiff in Germany. They innovated the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company which, after Michtom’s death, came to the largest doll-making company in the United States.

Michtom was born to a Jewish family and immigrated to New York in 1887. He vended delicacy in his shop at 404 Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn by day and made stuffed creatures with his woman Rose at night.

The teddy bear was inspired by a cartoon by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist CliffordK. Berryman depicts American chairman Theodore Roosevelt — generally called”Teddy”— having compassion for a bear at the end of an unprofitable stalking trip in Mississippi in 1902.

Michtom saw the delineation and created a bitsy plush bear cub which he transferred to Roosevelt. After entering authorization to use Roosevelt’s name, Michtom put a plush bear in the shop window with the sign”Teddy’s bear.”After the creation of the bear in 1902, the trade of the bears was so brisk that in 1907 Michtom created the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company.

Michtom failed on July 21, 1938, at the age of 68. He was predeceased by his cherished woman Rose and two children and survived by two sons and a son.

He ordered it to be transferred to the United States.

Although Steiff’s records show that the bears were produced, they aren’t recorded as arriving in theU.S., and no illustration of the type,”55 PB”, has ever been seen, leading to the story that the bears were wrecked. Still, the story is disputed – author Günther Pfeiffer notes that it was only recorded in 1953 and says it’s more likely that the 55 PB wasn’t sufficiently durable to survive until the present day. Although Steiff and Michtom were both making teddy bears at around the same time, neither would have known of the other’s creation due to poor transatlantic communication.

North American preceptor Seymour Eaton wrote the children’s book series The Roosevelt Bears, while musician John Walter Bratton wrote a necessary”The Teddy Bears’Picnic”, a” characteristic two-step”, in 1907, which latterly had words written to it by lyrist Jimmy Kennedy in 1932.

Early teddy bears were made to look like real bears, with extended snouts and beady eyes.
