Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of profitable planning and statistical development in the post-independent period, the Govt. of India has decided to designate June 29 every time, coinciding with his birth anniversary, as Statistics Day in the order of the special day to be celebrated at the public position.

The government of India is celebrated National Statistics day on 29th June on the birth anniversary of prof. P C Mahalanobis. The Day is celebrated to produce mindfulness among youth about the part of statistics in socio- profitable planning and policy expression.

The Day to vulgarize the use of Statistics in everyday life and acclimatize the public as to how Statistics helps in shaping and framing programs.

His Early Life

Mahalanobis belonged to a family of Bengali landed gentry who lived in Bikrampur( now in Bangladesh). ( citation demanded) His forefather Gurucharan( 1833 – 1916) moved to Calcutta in 1854 and erected up the business, starting a druggist shop in 1860. Gurucharan was told by Debendranath Tagore( 1817 – 1905), father of the Nobel Prize-winning minstrel, Rabindranath Tagore.

Gurucharan was laboriously involved in social movements similar to the Brahmo Samaj, acting as its treasurer and chairman. His house on 210 Cornwallis Street was the center of the Brahmo Samaj. Gurucharan married a widow, an action against social tradition.

Gurucharan’s elder son, Subodhchandra( 1867 – 1953), came to a distinguished preceptor after studying physiology at Edinburgh University. He was tagged as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was the Head of the dept. of Physiology, University of Cardiff( the first Indian to enthrall this post in a British university). In 1900, Subodhchandra returned to India, launching theDept.

of Physiology in the Presidency College, Calcutta. Subodh Chandra also became a member of the Senate of the University of Calcutta.

Gurucharan’s young son, Prabodh Chandra( 1869 – 1942), was the father ofP.C. Mahalanobis. Born in the house at 210 Cornwallis Street, Mahalanobis grew up in a socially active family girdled by intellectualists and liberals.

Mahalanobis entered his early training at the Brahmo Boys School in Calcutta, graduating in 1908. He joined the Presidency College, also combined with the University of Calcutta, where he was tutored by preceptors who included Jagadish Chandra Bose, and Prafulla Chandra Ray. Others attending were Meghnad Saha, a time inferior, and Subhas Chandra Bose, two times his inferior at the council.

Mahalanobis entered a Bachelorette of Science degree with honors in drugs in 1912. He left for England in 1913 to join the University of London.

After missing a train, he stayed with a friend at King’s College, Cambridge. He was impressed by King’s council Tabernacle and his host’s friendM.A. Candeth suggested that he could try joining there, which he did. He did well in his studies at King’s, but also took an interest in cross-country walking and punting on the swash.

He interacted with the fine genius Srinivasa Ramanujan during the latter’s time at Cambridge. After his Tripos in drugs, Mahalanobis worked withC.T.R. Wilson at the Cavendish Laboratory. He took a short break and went to India, where he was introduced to the star of Presidency College and was invited to take classes in drugs.

After returning to England, Mahalanobis was introduced to the journal Biometrika. This interested him so much that he bought a complete set and took them to India.

0He discovered the mileage of statistics to problems in meteorology and anthropology, beginning to work on problems on his trip back to India.

The Government of India decided to celebrate the outstanding donation made by Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of profitable planning and statistical development and hence mark his birth anniversary as ‘ National Statistics Day.
