16 January Special Day: National Nothing Day

National Nothing Day is an”un-event” proposed in 1972 by Schoolteacher Jothy Narayanasamy and observed in the United States annually on January 16 since 1973, when it was added to Chase’s Timetable of Events. It isn’t actually a public vacation, as that requires an act of Congress. Its purpose is to give Americans one National day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing, or recognizing anything.

It’s patronized by Pall’s National Nothing Foundation, registered in Capitola, California, and has been supported by the YouTuber Ephemeral Rift.

In the United States, the third Monday of every January has latterly been inaugurated as Martin Luther King Jr. Day which falls between the 15th and 21st. This means that one in seven on January 16 now falls on a public vacation (Monday, 16th Jan 2012), effectively arrogating the veritable nature of National Nothing Day.

In discrepancy, the Realist Society of Canada (RSC) has a religious vocation called THABS (“There has always been commodity” Day, pronounced/ ˈtæbs/). THABS Day is devoted to the festivity of”the consummation that if there was ever nothing,

there would be nothing now”. It’s celebrated on July 8 each time.
Pall’s commemoration, when proposed in 1972, wasn’t a new idea. In 1956 the Associated Press circulated the proclamation by Mayor JamesW.

Morgan of Birmingham, Alabama of a”National Nothing Week” to be celebrated 26 February through 3 March that time. The news item appeared in journals nationwide.
