World Lion Day
Today, we invite you to celebrate one of the most majestic species to ever walk the earth. It’s World Lion Day! Every year on 10 August, lion lovers across the world use this day to raise awareness about the dwindling lion population. In addition, we also suggest ways to help conserve lion habitats.
The lion species, also known as Panthera leo, is one of the largest species on Earth. Typically weighing 300 to 550 pounds, the lion can vary in color from light brown to dark reddish brown. Surprisingly, there is also a rare white lion found in the wild here. Easily recognized by its thick mane, the lion is also muscular and emits a loud, deaf roar. Unfortunately, as majestic lions I think, they are slowly disappearing.
Until 3 million years ago, lions roamed freely in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Today, loins live freely in their natural habitat in only two places, Africa and Asia. In addition, some lions are bred in captivity.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, lions are listed as
Vulnerable Species. Although they are not under the endangered species classification, they still face obstacles that threaten their existence.

History of World Lion Day
This celebration of the most beautiful and feared creatures of the animal kingdom was founded by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest recognized sanctuary dedicated to big cats. 10 August is a day for people around the world to come together to pay as much tribute to the mighty lion as possible.
Although a fun and exciting opportunity for all, its foundation is based on a very serious matter: lion numbers have declined dramatically to the point where the species must be placed on the endangered list, just as it’s Big Cousin Tiger.
World Lion Day is the brainchild of co-founders Derek and Beverly Joubert, a husband-and-wife team with a passion for big cats. He launched the initiative in 2013 to bring together both National Geographic and the Big Cat Initiative under one banner to protect the remaining big cats living in the wild.

Three million years ago, lions roamed across Africa and the Eurasian continent. But today, different ice ages and changes in the natural environment have meant that their range has been reduced mainly to select parts of Africa and Asia.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, lions are a “vulnerable” species, which means their numbers can and should be greater. Currently, researchers estimate that there are between 30,000 and 100,000 lions left on planet Earth.
Without significant intervention, there is a chance that they could find themselves on the endangered list along with other species at risk of extinction.
Therefore, World Lion Day is an occasion for lion lovers across the planet to take a step back against the extent and habitat degradation of the king of animals. These giant animals are among the largest land species in the world and are apex predators with a reputation like no other.
It would be a tragic loss for both nature and humanity if the species were to disappear completely from the natural environment.
However, the threats against lions are very real. They face the dual specter of the increasingly popular “trophy hunt” and human intrusion on their traditional wildlands. Food shortages combined with hunting tourism are making them more vulnerable with each passing year. The lion population has declined by fifty percent in the last four decades.
That’s why World Lion Day has three objectives. The first is to raise awareness of the plight of the lion and the issues facing the species in the wild. The second is to find ways to protect the natural environment of the big cat, such as creating more national parks and reducing the areas in which people can settle.
And the third is to educate people living near feral cats about the dangers and how to protect themselves. Large species such as humans and cats can live together in harmony, but only if they understand how to do so.

Volunteering at a local zoo that houses lions is a great way to learn more about the care needed to protect lions.
