Every time on 11th September, National Forest Martyrs Day is to flash back to those who laid their lives to cover nature. In 2013, the Ministry of Forest and Environment declared the Day National Forest Killers Day and since also this day is observed to flashback those who laid their lives for guarding the timbers.

National Forest Martyrs Day History

The Ministry of Environment and Forest declared September 11 as’ National Forest Killers’ Day. This day was chosen for a reason. On this day, in 1730, the ignominious Khejarli butchery took place. Khejarli’ is the name of the trees that are grown in a Rajasthani vill of the same name.

The Bishnoi community in the state considers this tree to be holy. In 1730, Maharaja Abhay Singh ordered the cutting of these trees. On hearing this, everybody stood against this. It’s believed that a woman named Amrita Singh defied this move. She offered her head rather than the tree. The king’s dogfaces guillotined her, along with her daughters who stood with her. Along with them, over 300 people were also killed as they joined Amrita Devi in this resistance.

When the king heard about what took place, he took back his order right down. He apologized to the Bishnoi community and also fete the immolation made by the people. latterly, he passed a decree that was engraved on a bobby plate that banned the felling of the Khejarli trees as well as beast stalking in the area.
